Toyota’s biggest claim to fame is its legendary reliability. There generally isn’t a single Toyota at your Toyota dealer that doesn’t possess a high reliability score. However, Toyota has its detractors too. Some buyers think Toyota makes boring vehicles. Let’s take a look at five classic and totally not boring Toyota models.

1990-1997 Land Cruiser

The Land Cruiser has recently made it back to your local Toyota dealer, but the classic nameplate has a long history. It’s hard to say which Land Cruiser model is the absolute best, but the model years between 1990 and 1997 were tough and capable with classic rugged design that doesn’t look dated. Not only that, but this Land Cruiser came with a cast-iron 4.0-liter or 4.5-liter six-cylinder engine that was basically bulletproof. These engines provided plenty of power through a four-speed automatic transmission. Higher trims came with leather seats and a sunroof.

1995-2002 4Runner

Like the Land Cruiser, the Toyota 4Runner is an incredibly tough and reliable SUV. The 4Runner is probably one of Toyota’s most legendary vehicles thanks to how long it lasts. Even when it’s over 20 years old and has over 100,000 miles on it, it’s still likely to sell for a lot more than the average used vehicle. The third-generation 4Runner is a great choice with its durable 3.4-liter engine and sleek, timeless design. As a relatively modern vehicle by this point, the third-generation 4Runner also came with airbags.

1993-1998 Supra

The Toyota Supra was never an average sports car, and it was also one of the best Japanese sports cars of the 1990s. It delivered plenty of power with an inline-six engine boosted by twin turbochargers. It made up to 320 horsepower with a six-speed manual transmission. The Supra is also a great car to tune. One of the best things about classic Toyota cars is that they often feature timeless designs that never look dated even decades later. The Supra is one of these classic models.

1989-1999 Toyota MR2

Alongside the Supra, the Toyota MR2 was a classic Japanese sports car of that era. The MR2 stood out with its mid-engine layout and small size. It also had many of the classic 1990s sports car features like pop-up headlights. The best engine in the MR2 was a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder paired with a five-speed manual transmission. By modern standards, it’s not all that powerful, but its small size and light weight made it feel much faster.

2011-2012 Lexus LFA

Although the Lexus LFA is not under the Toyota nameplate, Toyota is the parent company of the Lexus brand. The 2011-2012 Lexus LFA was a bonafide sports car, but it also enjoys the distinction of having one of the best exhaust notes ever. The LFA boasts a 4.8-liter V10 engine that makes up to 553 horsepower paired with a six-speed automated manual transmission. With an angled design made of many lightweight materials, the Lexus LFA has a striking appearance. This car doesn’t come cheap though. It still routinely sells for nearly $500,00.

It’s rare to see these classic models at your Toyota dealer these days, but if you do see one, you might want to give it a second look.
