Recently, Ford applied for a patent for an item that will allow you to have more usable space for the work you need to get done.

Regardless of the job you have, more of us make use of computers than ever before and need to have the ability to have an easy surface to put the computer on when we’re on the road. With more models that offer the benefits of in-car Wi-Fi, there’s a greater need for a surface to place a computer when you need to get work done.

Recently Ford filed a patent to develop a steering wheel that could be the right work surface for you to use with your computer. For some of us, getting on the road and doing work doesn’t mean having others with us to help get things done. Instead, this means we’re by ourselves and need to have the different surfaces of the vehicle give us the look and capability that makes a lot of sense for us to have the drive we want. This new patent will make it easier for you to pull out your laptop or other items that need a supportive surface and get to work.

Detailing this New and Interesting Ford Patent

The new patent filed by Ford is one that shows a foldable steering wheel. This includes a first section, a second section, and a pivot. The pivot connects to the two sections together to allow the top of the steering wheel to fold forward to create a flat space that’s perfect for a laptop computer. This means you wouldn’t have to use the back of the passenger seat or an uncomfortable position in the back to have the work surface you need to be able to get things done.

Not only will the steering wheel fold forward to support the laptop you make use of to handle the comfort you need to give you the ability to complete some work, but you’ll also be able to rest the screen against the edge of the dashboard to have the added support and the angle you want to take advantage of when you stop and pull out your laptop to get things done. This is a fairly straightforward automotive patent and this foldable steering wheel could be great for stopping to eat a meal or get work done while you’re by yourself.

Does this mean we’re going to see this item in a production vehicle in the future? We’re not sure if this could make it to the market because a locking mechanism that could fail might be an additional injury risk that you don’t need or want, but the idea is interesting enough. Ford had filed several odd patents recently and has made it enjoyable for us to see what this company is thinking might be the future of driving and features that we want in the vehicles we use every day. Maybe there will be a foldable steering wheel in the future to give us a great work spot to enjoy.
