With a movement toward the EV market, automotive designs are advancing and changing to a more futuristic approach. What designs will become commonplace?

The Tesla Cybertruck Brings a Look We Haven’t Seen Before

Actually, we have seen something like the Cybertruck. The early days of the DeLorean DMC-12, which came into extreme popularity as the time machine in the “Back to the Future” series, share a feature with the Tesla truck. Both of these vehicles use stainless-steel body parts, but the Tesla brings something much better than the DMC-12 of the 1980s. The body panels of the new Cybertruck are made of Ultra-Hard 30X Cold-Rolled stainless steel, making this one of the toughest parts of the truck.

The angles and shape of the new Tesla truck might give us one of the new automotive designs that could carry on for many years. This truck also offers strong windows that are claimed to be nearly indestructible. If Tesla can get it together and offer us this truck at the promised price, it could easily be a competitor in the market with the Ford F-150 Lightning, Chevy Silverado EV, and Rivian R1T. It’s easy to see the new Tesla truck is the most polarizing of the pickups entering the EV market. Could the style of this truck translate to other EVs following what Tesla offers? We’ll see.

Will Color-Changing Paint Tech Become Part of the Car World

At the 2022 Consumer Electronics Show, BMW showed up with an iX Flow that was covered in a special paint that could change color with the touch of a button. This new e-ink paint could give us something interesting to enjoy going forward. This special party trick doesn’t have to be a trick, but it might make listing the color of a vehicle on your registration difficult. Currently, this paint can only change from black to white, but there could be several options for future colors.

The specialized paint used on the BMW iX Flow is one of the many automotive designs that offers a futuristic approach that makes us wonder if it will stick around. The car is covered with millings of microcapsules filled with paint. Each of these capsules has negatively charged white pigments and positively charged black pigments. This allows an electrical field to change the color of the car. This means you could have a car that offers two different colors and various designs in the future, making it easy to switch from one color to another or add stripes to the look.

Will Cars Add More Functionality to the Design?

Some of the cars that we see might not take on futuristic styling as much as adding more functionality to give us a more practical application to what that car is supposed to be. The Canoo Pickup is a car that looks normal but has tons of impressive features to be more functional. The only giveaway that something is different can be found with the larger than normal front window. Instead of massive quantities of tech in this car, you’ll find a vehicle that delivers more of what you need.

The Canoo Pickup is extremely modular, giving you several rooftop accessories and features to give you the functions you want. You can extend the truck, enjoy the pull-out bed, and change the size of the vehicle. The modular design allows you to have a small car for going around a city and an extended top that increases the storage you need during a trip. This truck has hidden drawers, extra plugs, solar panels, and integrated lighting on the outside. Might we find more automotive designs that incorporate incredible functionality into the mix? It’s certainly possible.

Advanced HUD Functions Are Part of the Future

It’s not a complete vehicle design element, but it is a functional part of what we expect to see with more tech and features coming to the market. Current Head Up Displays (HUDs) offers readings you want with some of the gauges and readings you need. Adding a mix of Meta Materials to the display could bring a futuristic holographic function to the mix. This new subset of features might offer more information and focus on the driver and passengers to ensure everyone stays safe and secure during a drive.

Using a HUD means that drivers don’t have to take their eyes off the road. The holographic approach to this system means you can look beyond the gauges and displays to pay attention to the road during your drive. This should be a system that doesn’t block your vision during every second of your drive. Could automakers add a button to the steering wheel to bring up the HUD view when you want it?
