The new 2024 Toyota Tacoma is forthcoming and should be one of the most efficient midsize trucks to ever hit the market. What can we expect?

The best-selling midsize pickup isn’t made by a domestic brand. Instead, it’s the Tacoma, which has topped the charts for nearly two decades. The 2024 version of this truck receives a complete overhaul with new engines, a new frame, and a completely new build. This new Toyota pickup includes an optional i-Force MAX hybrid powertrain, offering an upgraded system that should provide excellent fuel mileage. Unfortunately, we don’t have the fuel mileage numbers for the hybrid powertrain yet, but we know most of what this new Tacoma should offer.

Six trims to get things started

The current generation of the Tacoma is known to be one of the most configurable vehicles in the market, offered in more than 30 versions. This new generation has six trims so far, providing either RWD or AWD setups with either an automatic or manual transmission. These choices already begin to show several ways the truck can be configured differently from its basic build.

The base powertrain is comprised of a 2.4-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine that makes 228 horsepower and 243 lb-ft of torque. This engine mates to an 8-speed automatic transmission to get things started in the base SR trim.

If you want more power, the i-Force powertrain is available starting at the SR trim and going through the entire range. The i-Force powertrain uses a 2.4-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine to deliver 270 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque when attached to a 6-speed manual transmission. If the 8-speed automatic transmission is chosen, the power increases to 278 horsepower and 317 lb-ft of torque.

We don’t have the fuel mileage figures for the hybrid power rain yet, but the i-Force MAX powertrain adds a hybrid motor to the i-Force powertrain to boost power to 326 horsepower and 465 lb-ft of torque. This hybrid powertrain is only offered with an 8-speed automatic transmission.

How efficient is the new Toyota Tacoma?

The hybrid powertrain aside, we can analyze the two lower powertrains and each trim level to provide fuel mileage figures for each configuration. Let’s take a look:

  • SR RWD Automatic – 20 city/26 hwy mpg
  • SR 4WD Automatic – 19 city/24 hwy mpg
  • SR 4WD Manual – 18 city/23 hwy mpg
  • SR5 RWD Automatic – 21 city/26 hwy mpg
  • SR5 4WD Automatic 19 city/24 hwy mpg
  • PreRunner RWD Automatic – 20 city/24 hwy mpg
  • TRD Sport RWD Automatic – 20 city/24 hwy mpg
  • TRD Sport 4WD Automatic – 19 city/23 hwy mpg
  • TRD Sport 4WD Manual – 18 city/23 hwy mpg
  • TRD Off-Road 4WD Automatic – 19 city/23 hwy mpg
  • TRD Off-Road 4WD Manual – 18 city/23 hwy mpg
  • Limited 4WD Automatic – 20 city/23 hwy mpg

How does the new 2024 Tacoma compare to the 2023 version?

The previous powertrains offered were a 2.7-liter 4-cylinder engine and a 3.5-liter V6 engine, both of which weren’t nearly as efficient as the powertrain lineup offered for the 2024 model. The most efficient version from 2023 was the V6 powertrain, which returned 19 city/24 hwy mpg, which should be bested by the i-Force MAX powertrain in the new 2024 Toyota Tacoma.

Where’s the Trailhunter trim?

Although the new Tacoma Trailhunter trim has been announced for the 2024 model year, we’re unsure when it will join the rest of the lineup. This new model should sit between the TRD Off-Road and Limited models, providing overlanding features that will make it an easy choice when it’s time to hit the trails. The Trailhunter model brings a disconnecting front anti-roll bar, an integrated air compressor, steel skid plates, and bronze wheel and suspension features.

A new cab joins the Tacoma lineup

The Access Cab is gone with this new generation of the Tacoma. This base cabin configuration is replaced by a new Xtra Cab, which adds more interior space, including rear legroom. This new cab has a higher rear seat position than the previous model, enabling tall drivers to have plenty of leg and headroom when in the rear of this midsize truck.

The new 2024 Toyota Tacoma is an exciting and excellent choice, providing impressive power and fuel mileage in this class. This new truck continues to include several configurations and powertrains to make it easy for everyone to find a Tacoma that meets their needs.

Could the new Tacoma be the right midsize truck for you? It’s the most popular choice in its class and continues to bring a manual transmission to the market. Good luck finding that in any other midsize pickup.
