Acura brings back a name from its past while entering the luxury electric SUV market. The new 2024 Acura ZDX SUV is on the way, giving us another entry.
The original ZDX was a fastback-styled sporty vehicle that straddled the line between a compact crossover and four-door coupe in 2010. This ZDX was well ahead of its time, but the new model hits the market at the right time. This new version has a more traditional two-box SUV shape to leave no doubt about what it is. Let’s review some qualities of this new Acura SUV.
This Acura is the product of partnership
Honda entered a partnership with General Motors to utilize the Ultium battery platform for the first round of electric vehicles from Honda and Acura. The new ZDX will ride on this platform and should include a rear-mounted electric motor layout that delivers 340 horsepower in the base trim. If the concept version tells us anything, we’ll see smooth styling with a floating roof, smooth body lines, and a light-up grille. The concept model also featured a narrow yoke-style steering wheel and a transparent infotainment screen, which are features we don’t expect to find in the production version, but it would be cool if they were part of the mix.
More power and performance with the Type S badge
The new Acura ZDX SUV lineup will include a performance-oriented Type S version that should add a second electric motor on the front axle, standard AWD, and 500 horsepower for some fun and active driving. This new Type S variant should also offer excellent driving manners and performance features that can make it faster, more agile, and a lot more fun. Will you drive the base model or go for the gusto and step up to the Type S version?
How do we know so much?
Acura hasn’t released any of the official power numbers for this new electric SUV. How is it that we already know this much about this new Acura SUV? The new ZDX shares a platform with the Cadillac Lyriq. This platform allows us to guess the power numbers and configurations that will be offered for this new Acura SUV. Based on this information, we also expect this new Acura to deliver 312 miles of driving range from a full charge and use the same 102-kWh battery pack as the Lyriq.
Should the cabin be more conservative?
When the new Acura ZDX hits the production line, we should find a more conservative interior design than what was offered in the Precision EV Concept. Unless Acura changes the steering layout, the yoke-style steering apparatus will be replaced with a traditional circular wheel. This new electric SUV brings a two-row seating layout and will likely include a full package of premium interior materials and some eco-friendly surfaces to allow this EV to be as green as possible. Will this new Acura SUV deliver the look and feel you want to enjoy when it’s time for some driving fun?
The first Acura EV sets the table
If most of what’s found in the concept model translate to the production version, this new ZDX electric SUV will set a luxury table for the Acura brand. For years, this brand has straddled the line between mainstream and luxury, offering premium appeal with affordable pricing. Could the new ZDX push this brand over the line and force it into the luxury vehicle market? If the design elements and inspiration from the Cadillac platform have anything to say about it, the ZDX will quickly be put against some of the top names in the industry.
A daring name returns to bring Acura into the EV world
The 2010 ZDX was a transitional vehicle that took risks and became polarizing in the market. It might have been a little ahead of its time, but the new model won’t be. Still, Acura is entering the electric SUV world, and what better way to do so than to bring back a daring name from the past? This could be why the new Acura EV is named ZDX. This new model has all the tools to show up and be extremely competitive in the EV market.
The new 2024 Acura ZDX could be more Cadillac and less MDX, but that won’t matter once the Acura styling elements are added. This electric crossover could have the right platform to be a powerful and impressive choice in the 2024 model year. We’ll share more as the release date comes closer for the ZDX and its Type S variant.
