The very first model of the new GMC Hummer EV SUV was sold at auction last month, and now it’s up for auction once again.

An anonymous bidder paid $500,000 to buy VIN 001 of the new Hummer EV SUV. While that’s a bargain compared to the $2.5 million paid for the first GMC Hummer EV truck, it’s still much more than what this SUV retails for. The GMC electric SUV was sold at the Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale charity auction last month, and the winning bidder is now entertaining reasonable offers for the vehicle.

What makes this SUV special?

Anything that’s the first of something is pretty special. That said, VIN 001 is painted Moonshot Green Matte with a Lunar Shadow interior. The model is a fully loaded Edition 1 version with three electric motors that produce 830 horsepower, allowing this SUV to hit 60 mph in only three seconds. The most significant aspect of this SUV is that it’s the first one and the only one that will ever be able to say that. Otherwise, this GMC SUV wouldn’t be much more than one of the many other models that will soon head to customers.

When will deliveries begin for the Hummer SUV?

The Edition 1 model of this GMC is sold out. The starting price for one of these top-tier versions is $105,595. Still, not all versions of the GMC Hummer EV SUV are sold out. You can still get an EV3X model that has the same tri-motor powertrain. The EV3X version won’t go on sale until later this year, and it will be priced a little higher than the Edition 1 version.

After that, the EV2X and EV2 will head to the market in 12-18 months, offering prices that start under $100,000. Both of the EV2 versions use two electric motors and produce 625 horsepower with a sprint time of 4.2 seconds. All versions of the new Hummer EV SUV offer up to 300 miles of driving range.

What’s the difference between the SUV and truck?

Initially, it’s easy to see that an SUV and a pickup truck are extremely different vehicles. Other than this immediate distinction, the SUV has a shorter wheelbase, which should make it a little more maneuverable when taken to a parking lot or while tackling tight trails. The new SUV version of this electric GMC truck includes the four-wheel steering Crab Walk model, an adjustable air suspension for the Extract model, and the optional Extreme Off-Road package. GMC also gave this new SUV a full-size spare tire mounted on the rear gate, which is a welcome feature for this off-road SUV.

The optional Extreme Off-Road Package brings some special features, including 35-inch all-terrain tires wrapped around the 18-inch wheels, extra underbody protection, low-mounted cameras for trail riding visibility, improved axles with heavy-duty components, a locking front differential, and rear motors that can mimic a locked differential.

A massive SUV needs a big battery

The new GMC Hummer EV SUV uses a large 200-kWh battery pack with a standard 400-volt electrical system for charging. This system is only offered on the EV2; the other models will have an 800-volt system. This GMC SUV can accept fast charging speeds of up to 300 kW and brings a claimed driving range of more than 300 miles on a single charge.

This isn’t your typical EV

In today’s market, most EVs have sparse interiors and are extremely tech-centric, with all controls on a single central screen. This trend, which was started by Tesla, is kind of annoying to some drivers. Thankfully, the Hummer SUV offers a wonderful mashup of old and new. You’ll find the desired tech but also plenty of hard buttons and physical switches to ensure you’ve got the desired controls at your fingertips. There’s even a thick T-shaped shifter and rotary drive-mode selector on the center console to make it much easier for you to find the right gear and drive the way you want.

This blending of old and new looks great in the Edition 1 model, which also features leather-stitched surfaces with distinct bronze accents. This new SUV also features removable roof panels for the Infinity Roof. This system allows drivers to lift off the four transparent Sky Panels and the I-bar to enjoy an open-air feeling during the drive.
The new GMC Hummer EV SUV has arrived; will it be an SUV you drive?
