When Grandma bakes, she tosses in a little of this and a little of that. The new Volvo EX90 seems to do the same for the Volvo brand.
The new EX90 will sit above the XC90 in the lineup when it goes on sale as a 2024 model. This new Volvo is an all-electric SUV that borrows from the Concept Recharge show car, brings the “Thor’s Hammer” LED headlights on the front, and uses a more powerful electric platform than what we find on the C40 Recharge and XC40 Recharge SUVs.
How Powerful Could this New EV Be?
We won’t see the final stats for this new Volvo electric SUV until it’s closer to the release date, but a standard 496-horsepower electric powertrain is expected to be used to power this new luxury vehicle. The driving range should come in at nearly 300 miles per charge, and it can be recharged via DC fast-charging to keep you going on a road trip after only a few minutes connected to the charger. This new EV brings the next-generation driver-assistance tech from Volvo, which continually evolves and improves to give us better tech to keep us safer out on the road.
Could New Trim Level Come with a New Name?
The new Volvo EX90 is a brand new nameplate for the Volvo brand. As the new top model in the family, this EV could bring new trim names to the mix but likely will not do so. Instead, we expect to see the same trim level names that we see in the Volvo lineup right now. That means we should have a base Core trim, a mid-range Plus version, and the Ultimate model that’s loaded up with everything while sitting at the top of the lineup.
Power Translates to Unusual Speed
All versions of the EX90 will come with a dual-motor AWD powertrain layout which puts the power to all four wheels for more control The entry-level Twin Motor version should give this new Volvo SUV 402 horsepower, and the Performance model is the version that could provide 496 horsepower. A high-output version might make it to the market as well. This higher-end model might share its output and powertrain with the new Polestar 3. The power level for this model could reach 517 horsepower.
Even though this new top-end electric SUV will have a higher curb weight than the gasoline-powered XC90, it should hit 60 mph in only 5.7 seconds in the base model, with the Twin Motor Performance version hitting 60 mph in 4.7 seconds.
Can You Drive the EX90 During a Road Trip?
If you don’t mind stopping at DC Fast-Charging stations after 240 miles of driving, this electric SUV will be good for some road trips. The charging station can push the battery back to 80 percent of its full charge in as little as 30 minutes, which is pretty good. The EV architecture allows for bi-directional charging, which means you can use the Volvo EX90 to charge your household appliances during a power outage or charge another electric vehicle when necessary.
Yes, you can use this new top-end Volvo SUV during a road trip, but you need to plan for the various stops along the way. This is the new world of electric vehicles driving out on the open road.
Volvo Minimalist Styling in a Big SUV
The cabin of the new EX90 is large and comfortable. You’ll find ample room and a spacious, airy experience inside this impressive SUV. The large glass room adds to this open feeling offered. You’ll find three rows of seats to make this SUV large enough for seven people to enjoy the drive.
The minimalist feeling begins on the dashboard, where you’ll find a massive touchscreen to handle all of the controls. If you prefer buttons and switches, you won’t find them in this SUV. Another thing you won’t find in this SUV is leather upholstery. Instead of leather, this vehicle has wool fabric blended with plastic from recycled bottles.
The large infotainment screen measures 14.5 inches, and it’s situated in a portrait-style fashion. This screen features in-dash navigation powered by Google Maps to give you the most updated navigation information available. A Bowers & Wilkins stereo system is an available option to give you 25 speakers and the benefits of Dolby Atmos technology. Some of the speakers are inside the headrests, which helps surround you with the sounds you want to hear.
Will this Volvo Hit the Right Safety Levels?
Volvo has a strong reputation as one of the safest car brands in the world. This team promises new safety and driver-assistance features in the new Volvo EX90. We expect to see the next-generation adaptive cruise control with lane-centering and active steering assist. This will add one more name in the world of semi-autonomous driving features.
The EX90 should also include the typical safety features that we expect in our modern electric vehicles. There’s also an in-car radar system to help prevent children and pets from being left behind in a hot car. This is an advanced version of the rear-seat reminder system, giving us a better way to make sure everyone is safe and secure.
Volvo Fully Embraces the EV World
This new Volvo EX90 brings an evolutionary design to the market, giving us a vehicle without a grille. This isn’t the first EV without a grille, but it’s the first Volvo that doesn’t even have a fake grille on the front. This change allows the EX90 to be designed differently and made with an incredible style that is sophisticated and luxurious.
Will the new EX90 become the right electric SUV for you to drive? It certainly could be. This amazing new model has the style, features, and qualities you want to enjoy when it’s time to head out on the road. When you’re looking for a futuristic vehicle that’s ready to go, the 2024 Volvo EX90 can be that vehicle. Once it arrives in the market, it should be one of the best choices offered.
