Automakers tout top speeds and glorious performance figures, but do they ever actually test every car to prove these facts? The Bugatti Centodieci does.

To be completely fair, you wouldn’t expect the Chevrolet Corvette, Ford Mustang, or Dodge Challenger to go through single-car testing for each model. There are simply too many of these cars made for that to happen. On the other hand, the Centodieci shows that some boutique automakers that only produce the most expensive cars in low numbers could have all of them tested. This is precisely what Steve Jenny does for this special Bugatti.

No Miles is a Source of Pride

One of the most fun aspects of buying a brand-new car is seeing the odometer reading that could be extremely close to zero. If you order your car, you expect there to be fewer than 10 miles on the odometer when you receive it. That’s not what owners of this new and extremely expensive Bugatti will find. Every single model of the Centodieci comes with at least 217 miles on the odometer. This is something the small group of owners understands before buying this amazing car, and they are happy to oblige the necessary miles.

Why do New Owners of the Centodieci have more than 200 Miles on the Odometer?

Every model of the high-pries, ultra-exclusive Bugatti Centodieci is put through a series of driving tests that cover at least 217 miles. This is the distance of the loop that Steve Jenny, test driver for Bugatti, takes each car to ensure it passes his test as an extremely rare car that can perform to his discerning requirements. Because these cars have all been individually tested, new owners can feel confident they’ve bought a fantastic new car from this boutique auto brand.

More than a White Glove Inspection

Steve Jenny takes the Centodieci cars on a 186-mile loop that exposes the car to nearly every situation a new owner might face. These cars are ridden hard before delivery, which means there just might be a bit of road dust or brake debris on the wheels when the new owner receives their car. Jenny takes these incredibly rare cars through acceleration and speed tests at a closed airport, where he takes this car to its 236 mph top speed. We’re pretty sure this car could go faster, but it’s electronically limited to this number.

The course also offers a slalom, weaving in and out of cones, emergency maneuvers, and hard braking. If you can think of a way that a car of this ilk can be tested on a track, Steve Jenny is putting that car through the paces. Once he’s done, and the Bugatti Centodieci receives his stamp of approval, the car can be shipped to the new owners, who can then drive it hard when they want or put it in a collection to collect dust.

How Can One Man be Tuned into a Car So Well?

Typically, tests like these are performed in closed rooms with the conditions piped in, but Bugatti trusts Jenney and his ability to feel and sense everything about this amazing car. They claim he’s so attuned to the car that he can sense small variances in everything. It doesn’t matter if there’s a slight difference in the engine sound or road noises; he’s on it. He can even tell if the switches and buttons feel differently in the cockpit. He says this is all part of feeling the personality of the car, which is a lot different from the Chiron. This might seem odd since both cars use the same build and engine, but he’s got them down.

A Second Test Performed by Steve Jenny

Once the long test run is completed, Steve Jenny climbs in for a second test. This shorter test covers only 30 miles and is completed when Bugatti changes a few things on the Centodieci. They change the gearbox filter and the wheels/tires to be the final set that will go to the customer. Once these items are swapped, Jenny climbs aboard and runs another test with the car to make sure everything is just right. This gives the total 217 miles that have been tested by Steve Jenny and the Bugatti team.

An Exclusive Car We’ll Likely Never See

It would be a bit shocking if many of the owners of the ultra-rare Bugatti Centodieci ever took their cars out on the road. Even though they can live with the knowledge that these cars have been properly tested and are perfectly capable of handling some of the rigors of the road.

There are only ten models of the Bugatti Centodieci being built. This car debuted in 2019 to some amazing applause as a car that pays tribute to the EB110 of the 1990s. The first prototype didn’t enter production until 2021, and the testing of that car ended in early 2022. The total of 10 makes this one of the most exclusive and rare cars ever made.

How Expensive is the Bugatti Centodieci?

You might think that using the same skeleton and engine as the Chiron would put the Centodieci in the same price range, but that’s not the case. This extremely rare car is much more expensive. The cost for each of these ten models is more than $8 million. The Centodieci is a little lighter than the Chiron, but that difference doesn’t mean too much, considering how fast this car can go.

It’s always fun to talk about some of the ultra-rare and expensive supercars in the world. Of course, the person we should be jealous of is Steve Jenny; the man who gets to test each one and make sure it’s perfect for the customer. How can we get that job?
