If you’re in the market for a used vehicle you may want to wait until a particular day, month or season to make a purchase, as you can actually save money and snag a great deal at those times. So when’s the best time to buy a used car? Let’s take a look.
Around Holidays
Holiday weekends can be a great time to buy in general – every shopper knows this. But what about used cars? According to a study conducted by iSeeCars.com in 2016 the best holidays to find a good used car deal are Veteran’s Day, Black Friday and Christmas Eve. Since these are popular times to buy new cars it can mean many used cars coming back into lots as trade-ins or lease returns. The days following big weekend sales are a good time to peruse lots filled with used cars that would otherwise end up in auction.
End of the Month, Quarter, or Year
Dealerships and salespeople have monthly, quarterly and annual sales quotas they need to reach. So try to time your used car purchase towards the end of the month and especially at the end of the year. You could possibly get a better deal, an extended warranty or maybe even a large discount on your used car purchase.
During the Off-Season
Depending on the climate where you live some cars may not be ‘hot’ at certain times of year. For example, convertibles don’t sell well in snowy weather so this may be a good time to look for a deal if that’s your car of choice. Higher gas prices can also motivate people to sell, and prices for gas guzzling SUV’s may dip at these times.
Winter Months
When it’s cold outside people are less likely to trudge around car dealerships and car lots looking for their perfect ride, so the demand drops as much as the temperature. With the drop in demand come cheaper prices, so take advantage of this time of year. Around New Year may be the best time of all – it’s the end of the month, end of the year, it’s a holiday and it’s winter. What’s not to love!
After New Models Have Come Out
When new or redesigned car models are launched there is often a spike in new car sales. This is good news for used car seekers as those buying newer versions will want to offload their older cars.
During Auto Shows
If there’s an auto show in your neck of the woods this may also be a great time to look for a used car for similar reasons as used car dealers and carmakers promote new models at these times, and those who want the ‘latest and greatest’ will trade-in or sell their old ones.
