Ferrari is a name that when mentioned, immediately invokes the thought of sportiness, perfection in style, track presence, and exceptional quality. For over seventy years we’ve seen the Ferrari name worn by some of the rarest and most sought-after sports cars in the world.
Every high-class auction seems to have a collection of rare models from this brand that tend to draw an amazing price that many of us can’t even fathom paying fora car. With that said, here are some of the greatest Ferrari models that have ever been built to give us a look at just how impressive this brand has been.
1940 Auto Avio Construzioni 815
This was the first-ever Ferrari built car, but it wasn’t allowed to bear the name. A contract stipulation prevented Enzo Ferrari from putting his name on any cars because he had been the leader of the Alfa Romeo race team for years. This meant the new car that he created wouldn’t wear his name but it did bring together the Avengers team with the Colombo engine, Carrozzeria bodywork, Fiat chassis, and Ascari as the driver. This car was entered in the 1940 Mille Miglia but it didn’t finish, but this is where it all started for Ferrari.
1962 Ferrari 250 GTO
As one of the last front-engine models that Enzo ever built the GTO represents everything that Ferrari stood far. This is the logical extreme of the brand with the beauty, rough focus, stubbornness, and the many victories that this car experienced during its time on the track. This is the model that has become known as one that garners the highest price at the auctions with some being sold at prices over $35 million at different locations at some of the most recent auctions.
1966 Ferrari 275 GT/B NART Spyder
This car was easily the greatest interpretation of what a grand tourer model should be. This car wasn’t originally built as Spyder but the North American Racing Team decided to use the Spyder model and this car became a star on the silver screen with Steve McQueen as one of the rarest Ferrari models ever built. The reason this was a rare car was the fact that a US dealer had the 275 transformed to a Spyder and only 25 were ever made, which at the time had to be sold at a discount even though this is now one of the most sought-after models on the market.
1973 Ferrari Berlinetta Boxer
This was the first model that showed that Enzo Ferrari had finally succumbed to the pleading of his engineers. This was the first mid-engined car offered by this brand and it offered up a flat twelve-cylinder engine that could rocket this car to 175 mph. This was the first of what would become a long line of mid-engine models that we’ve admired and loved over the past several decades. Without this car, we wouldn’t see the models that we enjoy from this brand on the market today.
