The vehicle that’s sold in more versions than any other is the VW Beetle. Not long ago, this car finally took over the top spot which had been occupied by the Ford Model T for many years. As the car that’s sold more than any other in the world, the VW Beetle has been a car of imagination, of value, and of longevity for several decades. Many people take an older model Beetle to fix up and personalize while others admire the fun and experience of driving one of the modern versions that can show off the personality and playfulness of the owner.

The Next Step for the Beetle

Volkswagen is working toward the next level of production for its new EV line. At the same time as they are preparing to release new EV models to the market, the Beetle is nearing the end of its production cycle and will likely not be offered again right away. In fact, the plans that have been released by Volkswagen don’t include the Beetle for future production, but it certainly could once the new models that will ride in the new EV platform find a foothold and show some success.

What this means is that we might not have the Beetle at all. If we do receive a new Beetle model, it will be built on the same EV platform as the other new models being offered and won’t return to the market until 2022. Before the Beetle can arrive, the new I.D. hatchback and the new Microbus will be offered to begin to let us see what this new EV platform can offer. This will start in the 2020 model year and will likely tell us more about whether or not we can expect to have the Beetle return at all.

Thoughts on What the Next VW Beetle Might Be

As you would expect, with the new MBQ Global EV Platform from VW, we will likely see the newest version of the Beetle come out as an EV model. Those who loved the original Beetle and its RWD layout will likely rejoice because the plans that have been drawn up so far show this car is being built with the same layout to push the power to the rear wheels.

That could spell an immediate following and a personality we’re sure to admire in this new EV. Another potential change to the Beetle is that it could grow in size and offer us four doors rather than the two we see in the current models. This would make the Beetle more suitable for small families or singles that want to have an extra set of doors to make access to the rear much easier. While we don’t know for sure that we will ever get to see the Beetle EV on the market, thinking that we will certainly allow us to look forward to the future of the VW lineup more than we would if it didn’t include the most successful vehicle in automotive history.
