The advantage of having a vehicle that is equipped with 4WD is the fact that you can allow the vehicle to put power to all four wheels at the same time so that you can get through the mud and the muck or across a sandy beach to be able to enjoy a remote location. The trouble is, you might not know when you should be in 4WD and when you shouldn’t in a vehicle that’s equipped with this feature that gives you the power and performance you want so that you can have a lot of fun on the trails.

What is the Stumpy Lever For

First of all, you don’t only put a vehicle into 4WD when you run into trouble, you need to be there before you get stuck and hope you don’t get stuck. The stumpy lever on your dashboard will have three settings; 2H, 4H, and 4L. The 2H setting is needed for normal road driving and is how you’ll experience the best fuel mileage in your vehicle. Typically, when you head out on the trails you aren’t concerned with fuel mileage, which is where the other two settings come in.

The 4H is used for normal speed driving when you need added traction. This allows you to have power to the front and rear wheels to make sure all wheels are working to get you where you need to go on the trails. The4L is for the maximum power and traction you might need when you’re handling steep trails, a large number of obstacles, deep mud, soft and deep sand, and rocky surfaces. The wheels will turn slowly in the 4L setting, but the will do so with more power to help you crawl along the trail and get where you need to go.

Another Important Factor

You’re going to need to take a tire pump along with you when you want to take your 4WD vehicle out on the trails to have the fun you’re looking for. The reason for this is the fact that you’re going to need to lower the tire pressure in order to have a footprint and the grip needed out on the trails. Normally, on the road, you’re trying to decrease the friction to have better fuel mileage, which is why your tires are pumped up as high as they are, but on the trails, this needs to be changed to have more grip.

Now that you know more about how and when to use the 4WD settings of your vehicle and the tire pressure changes that will need to take place, it’s time to head out on the trails and have some fun. Get in your 4WD model and experience the fun and activity offered to you in the wilderness. You can meet up for a party in the woods or find yourself driving to a secluded location for the quiet and serenity needed to be able to allow you to recharge and enjoy the peacefulness you find.
