As one of the three hosts of the new Amazon Prime series The Grand Tour, Richard Hammond is well respected for knowing a lot about cars. He’s a professional driver and an entertaining personality that’s been part of both this new show and the previous one he hosted with Jeremy Clarkson and James May which was Top Gear. His credentials are certainly without question and you would expect with the amount of time he was behind the wheel that he would have had some mishaps in his career of driving.

Recently, we discussed the fact that Hammond had a crash in a Rimac One that he was driving during a timed hill climb in Switzerland. This crash resulted in the complete destruction of this high-powered, super expensive, and extremely rare hypercar that also resulted in Hammond breaking his leg in the process. This particular accident wasn’t the last time he would drive and his desire to get back behind the wheel is infections on the show. Certainly, we can forgive on mishap in an expensive supercar that the show can afford to lose, but what if this happened more than once.

During the video clip attached below, we see the trio finish the year of 2017 with their own awards segment which they chose to call the “Nigel Awards” for the worst of something that was judged. These awards are funny to see and certainly were worthy of awarding to the vehicles that were chosen, but when it comes to the cast and the worst thing they had done during the show, the award for this particular incident was given to Richard Hammond, and it wasn’t because he crashed a supercar in Switzerland during his hill climb run.

What earned Hammond the “Nigel Award?”

During the airing of the show in which Richard Hammond filmed his segment with the McLaren 720S, he used two different models of this supercar for the shoot. This isn’t normally what the team does and even though Jeremy Clarkson pointed this out to Hammond on the show, he didn’t come clean with what happened until the segment in which the team aired the “Nigel Awards.” During this segment, Hammond admitted to the fact that he had accidentally filled the tank of the first 720S model with water instead of gasoline when the fuel had run low which caused the engine to let go when he was driving.

The result of this mishap is not only the fact that Richard Hammond won the “Nigel Award” for this disaster but what it really cost was the show a second supercar. Is this part of the plan for this Amazon Prime show? Is Richard Hammond being told he has to pay for the cars he’s destroyed? I’m sure this is all just part of the plan for the show and what can happen when you air a show about cars where some accidents can happen, some of what occurs when someone isn’t even behind the wheel.
