With the latest record time that was set at Nurburgring by the Lamborghini Huracan Performante of 6:52.01 for the 12.9-mile course, many automakers and teams are working to see if they can break this time and then put their own car at the top of the leader board. In order to make this happen a team will have to come equipped with a seriously special car and on that has proved its capability in the past around this track or around others that offer similar challenges to what Nurburgring has for the cars and the drivers.
The Team for the Task
In an effort to challenge the top time offered and bring the glory of being the fastest around this track to the US, this team was assembled and crowd-funded to take a pair of American supercars to this harrowing track in Germany to see if they could pull off the feat.
The cars that were chosen were a pair of Dodge Viper ACR models that have been specially equipped to make them as fast as they possibly could be around the track. With confidence, this team headed out from Texas to see if they could be the team at the top.
These two Dodge Viper ACR models have been equipped with the Extreme Aero packages to make sure they had every advantage and the tire supplier Kumho make certain to offer the tires that would be right for this track and the typical conditions it offers.
In the past, this team has been able to record an impressive time on the track of 7:03.45 which is only a few seconds shy of what the Lamborghini was able to accomplish, but those few seconds are a lifetime when you’re talking about racing around a track.
The Challenge
In an area of the world that typically stays at relatively mild temperatures, especially in the summer, the team found the Nurburgring track had been under a bit of a heat stroke for several days. The track temperature had gotten up to as high as 111 degrees which would make it nearly impossible to race around on the tires and have the right grip ratio. In fact, during testing, the team was eating through tires because of this high temperature which was creating more friction than normal with the rubber when it touched the road.
The result of this run around the track wasn’t what the team expected. They were able to improve upon their previous time and make the 12.9 mile run in 7.03:23 but still had to go home as a pair of hungry vipers that are still waiting to dine on the Lamborghini. This is an example of how much all of the different elements that come into play during these fast lap attempts really can matter and need to be taken into consideration. Thankfully, the team isn’t giving up as they will come back in a week or more and try to take down the Huracan Performante once again.
