When it comes to showing off what a vehicle can do some of the most insane stunts have been attempted by some of the most respected brands in the automotive industry. Whether they are working to show you a sports car or trying to sell you an SUV the right way to show off a vehicle is something that’s different from what you’ve seen in the past. This could be done in a variety of ways and you could see some of the most impressive stunts this way, but a lot has to go into making sure a vehicle can pull off the stunt for the crowds.
When Jaguar brought out their current SUV, the F-Pace, they used a loop. This loop was much like the ones you enjoyed as a child playing with Hot Wheels on the floor of your parents’ home. The challenge with this loop was ensuring the speed was right to get up and through the loop. It took several hours of testing and attempts to make sure the vehicle would make it all the way around safely and finish at the other end of the look like it’s supposed to. During this stunt, the vehicle never actually left the road.
In order to show off and create a buzz for the new E-Pace SUV, which is the next version of what Jaguar has to offer, the team chose to make the vehicle leave the ground and perform a barrel roll. This required a large air cushion to land on before they could solve all of the challenges of creating the roll effect and the ramp that would be used at the end of the stunt. Even though a barrel roll is something that’s been done many times over by stunt professionals, it’s not something that Jaguar normally attempts.
Eventually, the team understood the dynamics enough to go from a robotic driven E-Pace to one that had a driver inside which was Terry Grant. Before they were able to complete an actual jump with Grant behind the wheel, he got in the vehicle and performed the jump onto the air cushion to show that it could be done and that he was ready to take on the challenge of making this larger SUV roll onto a dirt track ramp after leaving the ground in an effort to complete the full barrel roll.
The jump that Terry Grant completed in the production-spec E-Pace was considered the final and best jump and it was captured on film for the promotion. Not only was this done as a promotion for the brand, but it earned them a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records to show they could perform this impressive stunt that ended up with the team having one of the most amazing promotional spots with an SUV that leaves the ground and performs a full barrel roll before returning to the ground unharmed and ready to roll.
